Fisk in the studio in 2018
VM Fisk is an interdisciplinary artist who uses her art practice as a way to investigate and process her experiences living with neurodivergency. Primarily working with acrylic paint on shaped wood panel, Fisk also creates works using whatever medium lends itself to the particular idea at hand; paper, clay, metal, plaster, flock, and even trash. Exploration of material and process is integral to her practice. Fisk examines shape, color, texture, and pattern through what she refers to as “mild illusions,” hoping to remind the viewer that things may not always be as first perceived. These mild illusions are born from absent-minded doodles, which she practices as a form of meditation—a way to try to organize the constant chatter in her mind.
Fisk studied painting and video art at California Institute of the Arts and sculpture at Virginia Commonwealth University. Fisk spent several years working in the film industry as a member of the Art Director’s Guild before pursuing a career in the visual arts.
Her works have been exhibited nationally at institutions including the Armory Center for the Arts in Pasadena, CA, and her works are held in the Mexic-arte Museum Permanent Collection in Austin, TX and the Capital One corporate collection. Fisk was also listed as one of Tribeza Magazine’s “10 to watch” in 2016. She currently lives and works in Virginia.
Excluding her animals and family, Fisk’s favorite thing is watching a thunderstorm roll in, or a windy hay field, or watching a thunderstorm roll in over a windy hay field.
